The studio is housed in a 3600 sq ft single story concrete bunker. The neighborhood is lively, but a few blocks removed from the rambunctious E. Carson St.
+/- Recording was started in the now bulldozed Millvale Industrial Theater (M.I.T.) as a low budget recording studio that serviced the needs of Pittsburgh’s independent music community. It was unassuming and cheap, but made quality recordings accessible.
After the M.I.T. closed +/- moved uptown to a former toy store only to be uprooted again shortly before bulldozers cleared the way for the Consol Energy Center. From there it was church in Brakenridge to a warehouse tucked away on the North Side to various temporary locations in bedrooms and art galleries all over town. In 2006 construction began on its current location on Pittsburgh’s South Side.
